Elder Abuse in Mobile Home Parks

As people live longer, the number of senior citizens increases more every day as more folks reach retirement age. With seniors living in both 55+ communities and all-age parks, elder abuse could be happening in your very neighborhood without you even knowing. It is important to learn how to spot elder abuse, the trends of elderly abusers, and what to do if you do witness abuse.

Abuse can take on a few different forms. While physical violence is perhaps one of the most recognizable forms of abuse, it is important to understand that it can also take the form of emotional, psychological, or financial abuse. It can also simply be neglect or abandonment. Be aware of elder residents who have bruises, cuts, or other injuries, especially

if they reoccur after healing. Also notice if the elder resident has experienced any rapid weight loss or unexplained changes.

It is also important to pay attention to any caregivers regardless of blood relation to the resident. Keep an eye out for aggressive behavior from caregivers such as refusing to let others see the person without them. Caregivers can be a hired hand but can also be family members or partners.

If you see clear, well-documented signs of elder abuse in your neighborhood, be sure to let the park management know of your concerns.  It may be necessary to call Adult Protective Services (APS) or the police. APS can provide investigations, needs assessments, food, transportation, emergency shelter, and remedial or preventative social work.

While we all want to protect one another’s privacy, it is important to be aware and protect those who may be more vulnerable. Work with park management to protect your community and make it a better place to live.
