The 4th of July has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. It was at this time John Adams foretold what this celebration would encompass for generations to come. “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by Solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be Solemnized with Pomp and Parade with Shows, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”
July 4, 2026 will be an extra special Independence Day, marking 250 years (Semiquincentennial) since the United States of America was born. Although still a year away, many have already begun preparations for this historical day, some have even been preparing for several years now! As we commemorate the nations birth this July, do not hesitate to celebrate with “Pomp and Parade” and count yourself blessed we live in the country we do.
