Protecting Skin to Prevent Cancer

Southern California is known for its warm, sunny weather making it important to know how to protect skin from harmful Ultraviolet (UV) rays by using sunscreen.

There are varying levels of Sun Protection Factor (SPF) for sunscreen. The American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends using at least SPF 30, but there are some other attributes to consider when choosing sunscreen. Plan whether you need a brand that is water resistant if you are partaking in any water activities.

Also consider using broad spectrum sunblock in order to protect from both Ultraviolet A (UVA) and Ultraviolet B (UVB). Sunscreens that are labeled with “broad spectrum” are FDA approved to protect you against both UVA and UVB rays. You should always look for that short phrase on the bottle or tube containing an SPF of at least 30.

An easy and reliable way to protect your skin is to stay in the shade! If there is no shade at the site of your activity, use umbrellas and wear a hat to help keep out the of sun.

Sunlight in the appropriate doses is very important to our health, providing the best source of vitamin D. However, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing, especially in the Sunshine State. Take care of your skin with sunscreen, shade, and shirts all year-round.
