It’s that time of year again, but in the fallout of the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, you may be confused about where your healthcare stands for 2026. One thing is for sure, time is running out, and it is important to renew your plan soon.
The federal Health Insurance Market-place, through The Affordable Care Act, Open Enrollment Period for 2026 coverage is currently underway.
California residents have several opportunities to enroll in or change their health insurance coverage depending on their circumstances and the type of insurance they have. The state’s main market-place, Covered California, plays a key role in helping individuals and families find affordable health plans that meet their needs. The open enrollment period for Covered California runs from November 1, 2025, through January 31, 2026, though to receive coverage by January 1, you must enroll by December 31. During this time, you can enroll in a new plan, renew your existing coverage, or make changes to your current plan. Applications can be submitted online, by phone, or through an enrollment partner. The simplest way to start is by visiting the official Covered California website at www.coveredca.com.
Unlike other health insurance options, California’s Medicaid program (Medi-Cal) is open for enrollment year-round. Individuals can apply at any time if they meet the program’s eligibility require-ments based on income and household size. This makes Medi-Cal a vital option for those who need coverage outside the standard enrollment period.
If you receive health insurance through your employer, your open enrollment period is set by your employer, often taking place in the fall for coverage that begins the following year. Employees should check with their human resources department to confirm specific enrollment dates and plan details.
Outside of open enrollment, individuals may still qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) with Covered California. This allows you to enroll in or change your health plan if you experience a qualifying life event such as marriage, childbirth, job loss, or moving. Typically, you have 60 days from the event to apply for new coverage.
Don’t wait too long and ensure you maintain continuous health insurance coverage throughout the year.
