The Social Security Administration announced that benefits will rise 3.6% in 2027 through its annual cost-of-living adjustment, known as COLA. For the many seniors and retirees who call mobile home parks home, the news arrives as welcome relief heading into the new year.
The COLA is designed to keep the purchasing power of Social Security benefits from being worn down by inflation. It is calculated using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, with data from July, August and September. On average, retirement benefits will grow by about $75 per month. The increase takes effect with benefits paid for January 2027 and applies to both Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income recipients.
The 2027 adjustment is the largest since 2023, when benefits jumped 8.7% following a surge in inflation. As price pressures eased, the COLA shrank to 3.2% in 2024, 2.5% in 2025 and 2.8% in 2026. This year’s larger increase was driven in part by higher energy prices, which climbed after the outbreak of the Iran war and remain elevated because of disruptions to oil and gasoline supplies.
The adjustment will reach 76 million Americans and provide greater financial stability. Advocates note the timing matters with one in five older Americans having no retirement savings making the COLA a critical help with groceries, bills and healthcare.
Not everyone benefits equally, however. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates the increase will add about $900 to the average retiree’s annual benefit, while the highest-earning couples who retired this year at normal retirement age could see a combined increase of $3,600.
For residents on fixed incomes, this is a good time to review household budgets and plan ahead. Keep in mind that a larger monthly check may be offset by rising costs elsewhere, such as utilities, groceries and travel, so it helps to track expenses closely as January approaches. Residents with questions about their own benefits can contact the Social Security Administration.
