How to Keep Your Carpet Smelling Fresh – Easy and Inexpensive

With the daily hustle and bustle of life, it is inevitable for your carpets to become dirty. Regular vacuuming will clear away dust, dirt, and grime, but what about the odor? Your carpet is bound to retain an unpleasant odor over time regardless of how frequently one vacuums; in order to keep your carpets smelling fresh, a simple deodorizer can be made at home with just baking soda and some of your favorite smelling herbs!

  1. Get the baking soda! Measure about 1/3 to 1/2 a cup of baking powder into a large mixing bowl. The baking soda will absorb and lift any unwelcome odors from your carpets.
  2. Now for the herbs. Take 1/2 – 1 teaspoon of dried herbs or flowers. Some common herbs to use are rosemary or lavender. Of course, you can use your favorite scents or even mix herbs! The finer the powder, the more evenly it will spread across your carpet.
  3. Sprinkle the carpet freshening powder. For this step, you can use a small spoon to sprinkle your baking soda herb mixture directly on to your carpet. When applying your concoction, be sure to avoid large clumps or piles; the goal is to make a thin, even layer!
  4. Vacuum time! After allowing your carpet freshening powder to sit for ten minutes, it’s time to vacuum it all up! Now your carpet will be smelling brand new.
