Halloween finds its roots in Celtic lands such as Scotland and Ireland. A tradition that the young folk took part in was something called guising. Guising was the act of donning a costume and accepting offerings from different households. They would then have to perform some sort of “trick” such as singing a song, reciting a poem, or telling a joke. In exchange for the entertainment, they would receive their “treat” which often consisted of fruits, nuts, or coins.
With many today in the United States having Irish or Scottish heritage, it is no surprise that this Celtic tradition made its way to America. Here, it evolved into what it is today. These days, children and adults alike enjoy a day to dress up in costume that range from cute to silly to scary, parading around their local neighborhood to meet with their community in exchange for candy.
