6 Ways to Stay Cool While Saving Money

  1. Consider a fan instead of the AC during peak hours. Yes, it is true that a fan uses electricity too, but it uses about 1/10th of the electricity that your air conditioner uses.
  1. Create a cross current. By opening windows in your home that are across from one another, you will create a wind tunnel effect that will increase air circulation and help keep you cool.
  2. Program your thermostat. Set your thermostat at 76 while you are home and 85 when you are away. If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, there are several options available for less than $25.
  1. Draw the blinds and curtains during the day/when you are not home. It is a small thing that can make a huge difference. Believe it or not, lighter shades work better as darker colors absorb light and retain heat from the sun. Blackout curtains can make an even bigger impact in blocking light and heat and there are many affordable options available.
  1. Cook outside. Take advantage of the nice weather and cook outside. If you don’t own a grill, some communities have them in common areas for resident use. This will keep the heat outside where it belongs.
  1. Check your seals. Many older homes have leaky windows and doors. Keep cool air from escaping by putting new weather stripping around the edges of doors and windows. There are lots of inexpensive and easy-to-install options. You will notice a difference in the temperature of your house fairly quickly.
